Shocks and Awe

Or Awe, Shocks!

I'm here in Livingston, MT in the BCDS condo. A huge thanks to Mike, Ben and BCDS for letting me crash here! Mike showed me the highlights of Livingston last night so I'm eager to get out and check out the town. First though, I'm on the phone hunting down shocks for the truck. Anyone coming to the wedding want to carry some shocks in their carry on?

I should probably catch up on some pics:

The Four Mile Fire Protection District fire station.

Cool little Quonset Hut fire station. It almost burned during the Four Mile Fire last year. One of their other stations, a historic structure, did burn.

Firehouses are pretty much the same wherever you go.

The field expedient door opener they have.

A pretty ingenious dry hydrant they have next to the station on a creek. The light colored PVC pipe is barely visible in left center. This way you don't have to worry about it getting silted over!

If you can make it out, it says something about being the "House of Humvee" since they have some surplus humvee brush trucks inside.

The fire station in Gold Hill.

A regenerating meadow that was burned during the Four Mile Fire. Dave and the fire crews made a stop on the fire at the edge of the meadow at the top right of the picture. At the top of the hill to the right is the historic mining town of Gold Hill.

The Sunshine Canyon fire station. This sits really close to a saddle where the fire blasted up the slope, destroying many homes.

The wedge salad.

Me, enjoying the food at the St. Julian.

The world famous truckstop/bakery/diner.

It's hard to get a sense of the scale of these bad boys.

Not an actual cowboy, but one of several sculptures along I25 in the Big Empty.

More rain and road in the Big Empty.

Yay! Finally, the last state before Canada.

Racing a BNSF coal train. I won.

The sun setting over the Crazy Mountains.

Take that GPS!

The view from the front door of the BCDS condo. Rough isn't it? That's Livingston Peak in left center behind the clouds.

Well, that's all the pics for now. I'm working on the shocks situation and hope to have some success later today. Mike recommended the Forty Niner Diner for breakfast, but since it is 1100 I'm hoping their lunch is just as good. Okay, I'm off OnManuevers in Livingston, followed by stops in Bozeman and final stop in Seeley Lake, MT for a two night stay in the fire tower. Yes, that's right, a fire tower. I know, I know. Only I would go out of my way to spend the night in a fire tower.

  1. Awesome stuff. Enjoy the trip. We'll see you on Friday. Can't wait to hear about the fire tower experience.
